Over on the Overwatch subreddit, a user known as spadler097 revealed how they were able to use a custom script inside of the Workshop to see where characters were hit and where they were not. They then compiled the data and used green dots to visualize the data, even collecting information on character’s idle animations or alternative forms like Winston’s Primal mode. From there, they used an external script to capture images at multiple angles which were then edited together to form a hitbox animation for each character.

While players will no doubt love the information on what the game counts and what it doesn’t, some of the data is truly surprising. For example, when D.Va is outside of her mech, her pistol isn’t actually part of her hitbox, so shooting at it will do no damage to her. The same can be said for other gun users like Soldier: 76, Tracer, and Reaper as well. Bastion’s tank form also has a slightly smaller hitbox than his bulky armor would indicate while Zenyatta is just about the direct opposite in that his hitbox looks to be too big for his character’s design.

Even though this was created inside of Workshop, this is so custom that it can’t be shared, so players will need to reference the animations from this post. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see how or if the meta changes now that players are armed with this information.

It’s also unknown if Blizzard will provide any changes to characters now that the hitbox values are public and characters like Zenyatta are at a woeful disadvantage compared to other healers. The bright spot is that even with Overwatch 2 in active development, Blizzard plans to keep both games in sync so Overwatch isn’t going to be left behind for a while at least. In order to keep the community healthy, updates will continue to be applied and that means there’s definitely a chance that character hitbox adjustments can be made.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
