RELATED: Every Video Game Release Coming Soon For PS5 And PS4
While it can be easy to keep track of what some of Sony’s larger studios are working on though, the inner-workings of others are not so well-publicized. Those hoping to find out what all of Sony’s first-party studios are working on will therefore need to do a little digging. Well, either that, or check out the carefully curated compilation of news and rumors down below.
Bend Studio
Bend Studio spent a good chunk of the last few decades working exclusively on PSP and PS Vita titles, but returned to home console duties a few years ago with the popular survival game, Day’s Gone. Sadly, the studio’s next big project won’t be a Day’s Gone sequel despite a petition for one garnering more than 150,000 signees. Instead, rumors suggest that Bend Studio is working on an open-world Men in Black game.
Bluepoint Games
Prior to getting snapped up by Sony in late 2021, Bluepoint Games had made quite a name for itself as one of the best studios for HD remasters and remakes around. Since the acquisition, however, there has been no official news regarding Bluepoint Games’ next project.
Bungie
Bungie is the latest studio to join the Sony family, with news of the acquisition breaking in early 2022. For the immediate future, however, Bungie will continue working on Destiny 2, with the Lightfall expansion still slated for release at some point later in the year. After that, it’s anybody’s guess, though some have suggested that the Bungie team could be tasked with developing a new live-service game; with Sony reportedly planning to release ten such titles between now and 2026.
Firesprite
The Japanese studio has typically worked as a support studio, providing the finishing touches on several of Sony’s first-party titles. This trend looks set to continue, as Firesprite is currently working with Guerilla Games on Horizon Call of the Mountain, an upcoming title for the PS:VR2. There are also rumors that Firesprite could be working on a Twisted Metal reboot, yet there’s nothing concrete at the time of writing.
Guerrilla Games
Following the huge success of Horizon Zero Dawn, the announcement that Guerrilla Games is working on Horizon Forbidden West probably won’t have surprised too many people. The game is set to release on February 18 for both PS4 and PS5. As announced in early 2022, Guerrilla Games is also working with Sony’s Firesprite studio on a PS:VR2 spinoff, Horizon Call of the Mountain.
Housemarque
Housemarque is one of the more recent studios to have been snapped up by Sony following the huge success of the developer’s 2021 PS5-exclusive, Returnal. Since the acquisition, things have been a little quiet, with no major news or rumors regarding the studio’s next project at the time of writing.
Insomniac Games
Insomniac Games and Sony always had a strong relationship, but it wasn’t until 2018 that the Japanese Giant proposed making things exclusive. Since then, the developer has released one of the best PlayStation exclusives of all time in Marvel’s Spider-Man as well as the hugely popular Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for the PS5. Insomniac Games is currently working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as well as a game based on Wolverine. The former is slated for a 2023 release, but there’s still no word on when exactly Marvel’s Wolverine might drop.
London Studio
Sony’s London Studio released some huge titles back in the day, but hasn’t done all that much over the past decade save for a few PS:VR games. That could all be about to change though, as Job listings suggest that London Studio is currently working on a brand-new IP that will feature online co-op gameplay, but nothing has been officially announced just yet.
Media Molecule
Media Molecule is one of Sony’s most innovative and ambitious studios, as evidenced by its 2020 game creator title, Dreams. The team at Media Molecule is still working on Dreams, adding new content and features to the title on a fairly regular basis.
Naughty Dog
Known mainly for its work on the Uncharted and The Last of Us franchises, Naughty Dog is one of the three main jewels in the PlayStation crown (the others being Insomniac Games and Santa Monica Studio). The developer’s co-president Neil Druckmann recently put out a cryptic tweet suggesting that three games were currently in the works. One of these is all but guaranteed to be The Last of Us 2 Factions, while there are also strong rumors that Naughty Dog is currently working on a remake of the first The Last of Us game. The final project (assuming that there are actually three) appears to be a brand-new IP, though there’s also been talk of a Last of Us Part 2 Director’s Cut.
Nixxes Software
Nixxes Software specializes in porting console games to PC, which is something that Sony has been doing more and more of these days. It’s unclear which, if any, of the recent PC ports the developer has actually worked on since joining the PlayStation family in mid-2021, nor is there any news regarding what Nixxes is currently working on.
Pixelopus
Pixelopus isn’t quite as well-known as some of Sony’s other first-party studios, but has still found moderate success through titles such as Concrete Genie and Entwined. Pixelopus is currently collaborating with Sony Pictures Animation on an as-yet-untitled project, but very little is known about what exactly this project will entail.
Polyphony Digital
Based out of Japan, Sony’s Polyphony Digital studio is currently working on Gran Turismo 7, which is currently slated to release in early March for both the PS4 and PS5. The game will feature more than 400 types of cars, making it one of the largest games in the series to date and, presumably, one of the very best.
San Diego Studio
Sony’s San Diego Studio works almost exclusively on the MLB: The Show series these days, though does occasionally dabble with other projects. Predictably, San Diego Studio is currently working on MLB: The Show 22, which is scheduled to release across multiple platforms — including Xbox Game Pass — in early April.
Santa Monica Studio
Best known for its God of War franchise, Santa Monica Studio is currently working on God of War Ragnarök; a follow-up to the hugely successful God of War (2018). The game is slated for a 2022 release and will be available for both PS4 and PS5, though there’s been no news yet on whether it will come to PC at some point as its predecessor recently did. Santa Monica Studio is also hiring for a ’large-scale new project,’ with previous job listings suggesting that the resulting game could be a fantasy-based title.
Sucker Punch Productions
Following the hugely successful release of Ghost of Tsushima, there have been plenty of rumors suggesting that Sucker Punch Studios could be working on a Sly Cooper reboot. As of the moment, however, the official line is that the Sucker Punch team is continuing its work on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, which serves as the game’s online multiplayer component.
Team Asobi
Another of Sony’s Japanese development studios, Team Asobi is best known for its work on the Playroom series. Job listings suggest that Team Asobi’s next release will be an ambitious 3D action-adventure game, with many speculating that it will be a follow-up of some kind to the PS5 tech demo, Astro’s Playroom.
Valkyrie Entertainment
Valkyrie Entertainment has traditionally worked as a support studio, with its most notable project probably being God of War (2018). Sony only acquired the Studio in late 2021, but, even before the acquisition, Valkyrie Entertainment had been brought in to help Santa Monica Studio with the development of God of War Ragnarök.
XDev
XDev has a history of collaborating with both internal and external development studios, having most recently done so in 2021 during the development of Returnal. There’s no news on what XDev is currently working on, but, considering the studio typically collaborates on one or two releases every year, that could all change pretty soon.
