For those following Apex Legends, the rumors surrounding newcomer Newcastle are now confirmed. The four-minute trailer gave Newcastle more than enough time to showcase his abilities, personality, and relationship with the other Legends. Whereas the previous season’s Mad Maggie was more related to Fuse, Newcastle’s loyalties are tied closely with that of Bangalore. For those interested, there is quite a lot to unpack in the short trailer.

Storm Point Is Getting A Facelift

The current state of Apex Legends’ newest map already hints at an impending storm on the horizon. With the advent of Saviors, it looks like the storm has finally hit the islands where the Legends duke it out. Dark clouds litter Storm Point’s skybox and a foreboading waterspout can be seen not too far offshore.

From the waterspout, a giant sea crustacean emerges to terrorize the Legends. This enemy will no doubt be added to Storm Point’s list of monstrosities that Apex Legends players will have to deal with when traversing the map. Unlike the Prowlers or Carthage spiders that already inhabit the islands, this new species of fauna looks like it can take a lot of punishment. It will require a full squad (or maybe even multiple squads) to take down one of these beasts, and if the trailer is anything to go by, its weak point seems to be the gills on its neck.

Spectre-Filled Weapons Vaults Are Now A Thing

As Newcastle and Bangalore try to escape the sea crustacean, they stumble upon a weapon vault that was unearthed by the creature’s activities. Bangalore eagerly reaches for a Havoc Rifle, only for Newcastle to fail at stopping her. This causes the vault’s alarm to trigger and unleash an army of Spectres - automated infantry units found in the Titanfall and Apex Legends universe.

Rare loot locations are nothing new to Apex Legends. Loot bunkers in King’s Canyon hold valuable weapons, hop-ups, ammo, and attachments, while vaults in World’s Edge, Loot MRVN’s in Olympus, and cargo bots on both of the later maps offer similar goodies. It looks like spectre loot vaults will add to the number of places Apex Legends players can find good loot on Storm Point. Considering some areas of the map are dead zones (Fish Farms has next to no action unless the ring pulls in on the location), this will entice players to explore Storm Point’s niche locales.

Newcastle Is Bangalore’s Brother

Last but certainly not least is the revelation that Newcastle is Jackson Williams - the thought-to-be-dead brother of one Anita Williams, AKA Bangalore. Unlike his sister, Newcastle seems to be more laid back and social with the other Legends. He can be seen carrying Horizon with one hand while they are on the dropship and doesn’t mind being the center of attention when he rallies his fellow Legends to take on Storm Point’s new sea creature.

As for abilities, players can get a good look at Newcastle’s tactical, passive, and ultimate abilities in the trailer. His tactical is a deployable shield, much like Lifeline’s old D.O.C. shield passive. While it is nowhere near as big or all-encompassing as Gibraltar’s Dome of Protection, Newcastle’s deployable shield gives him and his allies a small shield that provides them with temporary cover. It is yet unknown if the shield can be destroyed like Rampart’s Amped Cover tactical, or if it is invulnerable like Gibraltar’s Dome of Protection.

Newcastle’s passive is much more subtle. When one of his teammates is downed, he can carry them faster than they can crawl to safety. What’s neat is that instead of the downed Legend using their knockdown shield, Newcastle has his own shield that can be used to defend both him and his ally. This might seems a bit overpowered at first, but if Newcastle’s shield draws on the power of the downed legend’s knockdown shield, then maybe it will be a balanced passive ability.

Newcastle’s ultimate is the culmination of his role as a defense Legend. He runs in a single direction, jumps really high, and drops down a large, castle-looking wall. The wall has three tall sections that provide cover, two on either side and one in the middle. Connecting these sections are smaller segments that provide waist-high cover and allow legends behind the wall to fire at their enemies. The ultimate looks to be a stronger version of Rampart’s Amped Cover tactical ability, only with more health and cover.

These are just a few things that were hinted at by the launch trailer for the new Apex Legends season. Players will get a better idea of what Saviors has in store once the actual gameplay trailers come out. Until then, they can look forward to the upcoming Stories From The Outlands cinematic that will launch on April 28 - a video that will no doubt delve into Newcastle and his place in the Apex Games.
